Over the course of this 3-hour session, we’ll offer some high-level awareness across a range of themes and matters relating to our colleagues and friends, current and future, with differing gender identities.
We’ll talk about individuals that are on their journey transitioning between genders, discovering that their gender identity is different from what they were assigned at birth (including non-binary) and have a look at how ‘gender’ definitions can vary with context and situation.
Gender and Identity:
Exploring definitions and an overview of why they matter, including some background into how society has developed around gender-related topics and where challenges in understanding come from.
Challenges for all:
A look at the challenges faced by non-binary and transgender individuals, why those challenges exist and how we can support each other. We’ll consider people at all stages of their journey, from when they begin to feel ‘different’, through their transition (whatever form that takes) and through the rest of their lives. We’ll also have a quick summary of why others may struggle with acceptance and understanding.
Language and communication:
Looking at labels and descriptions, and how they balance being accurate with supporting individual identities.
Assumptions and stereotypes:
How we all need them to navigate the world but should manage them to avoid bias and discrimination. We’ll look at how they can help or hinder creating safe, inclusive spaces.
Behaviour and learning:
How can we all encourage learning by exploring our behaviour and that of others, working together towards a safe, inclusive culture.
Value from diversity in gender:
A quick look at why this diversity matters and how we can all benefit widely from learning about gender identities and transgender communities.
People and processes:
We’ll discuss ways, based on both processes and people, to work towards more inclusive environments for everyone, regardless of identity.
